LECTURE - PROF. SCOTT BETZ
ABTEILUNG GRAFIK / DRUCKGRAFIK

Scott Betz is an artist that constantly renegotiates his approach to images and experiences in the studio. He has collaborated with his children, his students and his colleagues. Most recently he has written a pop song based on Facebook conversations and will mine the data of the song to model and create a 3D Print.

Betz earned degrees in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking (BFA, MS, MFA). He has served as the President of FATE (Foundations in Art: Theory and Education) and now serves on the board of Southern Graphics Council International. He is Professor at the Winston Salem State University

recent abstract:

Scott Betz collaborates with design intern Jasmine Jones of University of North Carolina Ggreensboro to research and report on the state of art in 3D Printing. He contends there is little art to be seen coming from this print community. Many of the engineers and scientists who comprise the largest production 3D printing have co-opted the artists’ language (for example substrates, inks, and resolution) but more often the artists themselves are left out of these discussions and projects. In the hope of filling in the open art areas within the 3D Print world, Betz and Jones take an original pop composition and through surveying the Facebook community, he mines the dialogs in social media and the data of his music to create a 3D printed composition. But where is the art? Is it in the end product? Is it in the original idea? Or is it somewhere within the risky collaboration of friends and music. Betz documents the process of collaboration with his friends, children, Jones and the UNC Center for Design Innovation and will perform the piece on stage.
