Eleni Linas: Race and Class In Urban American Public Education - Can a Social Institution Act as an Agent of its Own Reform?

This talk challenges the predominant assumption that the reform of urban education in the United States lies entirely in improved resource allocation. It explores the idea that the public education system acts as an agent of cultural reproduction whose primary purpose is to perpetuate the occupation of black bodies in their current stations within the collective American imagination. If this is so, compulsory education becomes a sophisticated trap rather than a mechanism of social mobility. If it’s dismantled, what replaces it?

Eleni Linas is a teacher in the United States. Formerly a computer engineer, Eleni began a second career in teaching seven years ago. She spent three years teaching in South Central Los Angeles and currently teaches mathematics at a public high school in Chicago.
