CHRIS SALTER (Artist and researcher Montreal, Canada):
“MEDIATIONS OF SENSATION: DESIGNING PERFORMATIVE SENSORY ENVIRONMENTS”

Art, anthropology, the senses, and technology? Could there be a serious collaboration between these practices? This talk highlights a range of research-creation projects between 2010-2015 (JND, Atmosphere, Displace and Ilinx as well as to several new projects currently in development that seek to merge haptic, visual, acoustic and other phenomena) in collaboration with anthropologists, cultural historians of the senses, engineers and artists that explore new links between sensory anthropology and media art, design and technology. The ?anthropology of the senses? advocates a cultural approach to the study of the senses and a sensory approach to the study of culture. In keeping with this convergence, in my own efforts to cross-over and integrate sensory anthropology and new media arts we have been developing research programs that seek to open up a space ?between art and anthropology? (Schneider and Wright 2013).
