Art & Science: Thomas Grill. The sound of listening

The perception and understanding of sound is inextricably linked to a multifaceted context - acoustic, sensory, social, cultural aspects.
This talk will discuss relationships between the raw information content of sound and the process of human listening.
Examples will be shown from the domain of Music Information Research (MIR) and selected artistic projects.

Thomas Grill works as a composer and performer of electroacoustic music, as a media artist, technologist and researcher of sound.
His works range from installation-based sound art, to electro-instrumental improvisation, to purely acousmatic compositions for loudspeakers. Numerous appearances and presentations as well as scientific publications and lectures in local and international settings. Cooperations with renowned artists from the fields of music, literature, theater, dance and video.

Born 1972 in Austria. Study of technical physics in Linz, as well as of computer music and electronic media in Vienna. Doctorate in composition and music theory at the University for Music and Performing Arts, Graz. Lectureships at the University for Applied Arts and the University for Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. Development of commercial and open-source media software. Senior researcher at the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (OFAI).
Thomas Grill lives and works in Vienna, Austria.
