Care and self-care are hotly debated issues in pandemic times. Increasing care needs result in increased exhaustion. Focusing on the legal philosophical question if there is, in fact, a legal obligation to take care of ourselves, lawyer Šárka Homfray will deliver a lecture on The right to overwork. The law prevents our employers from pushing us over our limits. But what if there is no employer, only ourselves and those we care for. What is stopping us? Should self-care and “me time” be a legal right or obligation? And if so, how to get there? The workshop, facilitated by Šárka Homfray and Natalia Avlona, will focus on the practical ramifications of legal rights and obligations to self-care in everyday life bringing into focus interdependency in care.
Šárka Homfray is a lawyer, publicist and researcher based in Prague. She is a feminist and trade unionist and all this shapes the field of her work. Her work includes labor and public service law, discrimination and inequality. Homfray is interested in the future of work, particularly the digitization, flexible and precarious work and care and unpaid labor.
Natalia-Rozalia Avlona is a lawyer and researcher based in Athens. She is a research fellow at ELIAMEP (Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy) and research co-lead at DisCO.coop. Her expertise is on Digital Commons and Gender Issues. She is focusing on the intersection of decentralised technologies, commons oriented initiatives, gender and law. She is a member of the Management Committee of Cost Action From Sharing to Caring (2017-2021). Most of her free and non-free time is devoted to feminisms and commons-oriented initiatives. She has co-founded the techno-feminist hacking network Restorative Infrastructures.
