Exploring the Political Economy of Imperialism in the Past, and its Continuity in Present Times
Utsa Patnaik
Lecture Series Transcultural Studies

Utsa Patnaik is Professor Emeritus, Jawaharlal University, Delhi. Following a doctorate in economics from Oxford University, UK, she taught economics at JNU from 1973 until retiring in 2010. Her main areas of research interest include the agrarian problems of transition from peasant-predominant societies to industrial society, both in history and at present; colonialism and imperialism; and food security and poverty.
These issues have been discussed in several books, and in a about one hundred essays published in journals and in edited volumes. She has received the V.V. Giri memorial award from the Indira Gandhi National Labour Institute, Delhi; the Marxian Economics award from the World Association for Political Economy; and is corecipient, along with P. Patnaik, of the Paul Baran and Paul Sweezy memorial award from Monthly Review for Capital and Imperialism 2021.
