International Round Table

Due to the lockdown, the event will be held via Zoom.

The round table will address the nature and extent of the first travellers from Central and Eastern Europe to East Asia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In particular the eight-year journey of Alma Karlin (1889 - 1950) around the world will be highlighted, with a focus on East Asia, which will be further considered in light of a comparative perspective with other travellers from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe or the former territory of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. It will discuss the purpose and goal of such travels, the interests of the travellers, and their collecting practices. In addition, it will illuminate the diverse palette of East Asian objects, their role and importance in relation to the collector and reveal fascinating stories of their owners.
