John Levin (US)
John Levin makes music that explores a world of sustained tones, harmonics, and changing tunings that is best created with analog synthesizers. His sound also takes its inspiration from medieval polyphony, drones, early minimalism, and free improvisation. His studio work features the sounds of vintage Arp synthesizers, while his live performances utilize laptop with an Arp Odyssey emulated in software. Recent recordings include “Panic and Anti-Panic,” (2009) featuring laptop performances recorded live in Europe, and “Five Years Out” (2010), created with only a 30-plus year old Arp Odyssey and a delay pedal. Both are released on John’s own sonoriti.es label. He also performs as a member of the electronic trio Greenhill Builders (with Ron Schneiderman of Sunburned Hand of the Man). In 2010 they released the CD “Old Friends,” on Schneiderman’s Blueberry Honey label. John has lived and worked in Brattleboro, Vermont (USA) since 1990. In the mid-1980s he studied at Mills College in Oakland, California, where his teachers included Anthony Braxton and Larry Polansky.
