subMantra: Real-Time Drawings from Stockhausen´s Mantra(1970)
I produced a number of graphical drawings in ´real-time´ to Stockhausen’s Mantra after an intense period of architectural design drafting. These drawings form a collection of templates, the subMantra, which represent a gestural choreography of the Mantra, a theatrical exploration with the pen in its own bounded constraints on a page.
The hand was forced to find its own choreography within the limitations of each page, as it attempted to decipher the 13 cycles and their underlying mantra.
As the gestural quality of a particular cycle was completed, a blank page offered the possibility to explore again, in its own new dimension the hidden characteristics of the representation of the mantra. My hand was exhausted after completing the cycles, prompting a general virtuosic query about the potential of returning these graphical notions, these gestures back to life, in a condensed temporal space - time shift.
Shimmy (a dance move where the body is held still, and the shoulders move back and forth) reinterprets these gestural choreographies of the subMantra drawings, questioning the “mantra” of the qualities of the materials used, the quality that makes the material what it is - and remains despite all efforts to shake its shimmy out of it!

Verena Dürr & Ulla Rauter

Ulla Rauter und Verena Dürr kombinieren künstlerische Performance mit eigener Musik und spoken word poetry. Ulla Rauter spielt mit einem kupfersaiten-bespannten Violinbogen auf der eigenen Haut und erzeugt dabei elektronische Klänge, die von den Hautleitwert-Reaktionen gesteuert werden. Die Haut wird zum klanggestaltenden Interface, der Körper zum sensibelsten Teil des Instruments.
