(Lecture / Discussion)
Geology investigates the spatial distribution, chemical composition and age of rocks on the Ear th. Within the past 100 years, this science changed from a descriptive, conceptual research to a more quantitative approach, analyzing the processes which lead to the generation of mountain belts, oceans, and the ear th´s interior structure. On the one hand, traditional methods, e.g. compilation of geological maps or examination of rock forming minerals, are still a fundamental par t and basis of every geological study.
On the other hand, contemporary geology employs a broad range of scientific methods from math-ematics, physics and chemistry. This presentation aims to provide an overview of such interdisciplinary research, comprising geological field work, computer simulations, chemical analysis on the micro-scale, as well as 3D computed tomography visualization of rock samples.
