Does the Periphery Strike Back? East European Art Reconsidered

Ale? Debeljak (Department of Cultural Studies, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia)

The lecture will assume a critical distance to the artistic material at hand, and will instead outline the extended processes that have shaped the dividing and shifting limes between Western Europe and Eastern Europe, surveying the cusp of Modernity, Enlightenment, and Romanticism. Critically presenting the modern Western dichotomy of culture vs. nature and its translation into culture vs. barbarism in the European East in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Ale? Debeljak will emphasize the differences in advancement of freedom and urban cohabitation in the collective notions of center and periphery.
