Christiane Peschek: Forever Event
The idea of eternal life, or living forever, has been a subject of much debate and contemplation throughout history. At current date it is said, that in 50 years time death is no longer an inescapable fact of life, at least for those who can afford alternative solutions. Though it seems like the end of death is on the horizon, some people find the idea of eternal life to be com- forting and desirable, while others still find it to be terrifying and dystopian. The constant need for efficiency and productivity in our „hyper-active society“ is leading to a loss of meaning and purpose in our lives. The exhibition F O R E V E R transforms the gallery space into a poly-sensory experience questioning the future of phygital bodies and their mythology of an eternal consciousness.
The space becomes a non-ordinary state of observation that expands the presence. With a 3-d moulded ice sculpture, directional sound treatment and water fountains I evoke the somatic effects of (in)transience.
The exhibition project is understood as an environment to explore the inner life impact of our contemporary digital social interaction. What unravels, when the fast pace world is muted and the physical body becomes still? Which part of us deserves immortality?
“F O R E V E R takes time and space to recognize mechanisms that repeat from cosmic to microscopic processes, both physical and virtual, and invites the visitors to linger on with essential questions: What are the concern of a physical passivity, transience and not-being? How strongly do we need to stay connected with our physical shell, considering short-term „out-of-body experiences“ vs. the need for immortality?” - Magdalena Kröner
