20-year-old Andriy fled with his family from the Syrian civil war to his mother’s homeland in Lysychansk in eastern Ukraine. Here he joined the Red Cross as a volunteer and is involved in humanitarian work. In 2014, however, the Donbass conflict broke out and war caught up with him again. When his father dies unexpectedly, Andriy decides to accompany him on his final journey, the return to Syria.

“This Rain Will Never Stop” takes us on a powerful, visually arresting journey through the endless cycle of war and peace, told in expressive monochrome images and a sophisticated montage. From the Syrian civil war to the battle in Ukraine, Andriy’s existence is framed by the seemingly eternal flow of life and death.

Director Alina Gorlova has been asked for a streamed Q&A after the screening.

This Cinemarkt takes place in cooperation with ethnocineca 2022 - International Documentary Film Festival Vienna, 12.-19. May 2022. THIS RAIN WILL NEVER STOP was awarded with the IDA - International Documentary Award at ethnocineca 2021.
