Batik, the resist-dyeing technique of patterning cloth through the application of wax, is a centuries-old textile art form known in several parts of the world, but it reached its highest level of complexity on the island of Java. While deeply embedded in local traditions and linked to the worldview, philosophy, and social order of Java, over the past two centuries batik has become a powerful cultural medium. In 2009, UNESCO declared Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, the Weltmuseum Wien, Indonesian academics, artists, fashion designers and social entrepreneurs, we will reflect on the creative processes and various aspects of Javanese batik, which also inspire artists beyond the batik tradition and open up new perspectives.

NOVITA YUNUS established Batik Chic in 2009 out of love for traditional artisan crafted textiles and necessity to preserve the cultural heritage of Indonesia; fittingly the company motto is “Keep Heritage Alive”. With the goal of raising awareness and foster the popularity of Batik and other traditional Indonesian fabrics, Batik Chic is committed to create fashionable Batik items for all ages, while at the same time promoting vintage batik fabrics and designs that are quickly vanishing. Novita strongly believes that the success of Batik Chic and NY by Novita Yunus is due to two key factors: exceptional Indonesian craftsmanship and the rich culture of Indonesia, which she will address in her talk.

LARETNA T ADISHAKTI is a Lecturer and Coordinator of the Center for Heritage Conservation, Department of Architecture & Planning, Faculty of Engineering, at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She is also co-founder and presidium member of the Indonesian Heritage Trust as well as co-founder and advisory board member of the Jogja Heritage Society. As a director of Galeri Batik Jawa Indigo Co., Laretna T Adishakti will talk about Natural Indigo and Batik in research and design and about Galeri Batik Jawa Indigo as a showcase of Indonesian cultural heritage using environmental friendly processes.

ORGANISATION: Karin Altmann, Institute of Art Sciences and Art Education, Textile Department, University of Applied Arts Vienna in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Vienna.
