Meaning and practices of publicness

16.00 // 4 pm: Public Space/Urban Sphere:
A Conversation around Art Interventions and Symbolic Production in the City.
How can we analyse art practices dealing with public space and urban sphere both in terms of concrete intervention and symbolic production? The panel explores the tensions, political and symbolic, which often overlap within those practices which use the public space as - to quote Austrian curator Peter Weibel - “open field of action”.

Participants (in alphabetical order):
Cecilia Guida - Professor of Brera Fine Arts Academy, Milan; art critic, curator, IT
Claudia Eipeldauer - WochenKlausur, Wien
Emanuele Rinaldo Meschini - art critic, curator, author, Venice IT
Moderator: Elisabetta Rattalino - researcher University of Bolzano, IT

17.30 // 5.30 pm: The publicness rituality. Forms and rules of public/private space
What are the interactions in-between artists and communities and how could an art intervention turn “real” in term of effectiveness? In order to understand how artists interact with public space one should also analyze the space itself as a space heavily constructed and determined by its own history and symbolism. What turns a place into a public space? What are the rules and prohibitions that build that space, and, moreover, which is the frame in which artists could intervene?

Participants (in alphabetical order):
Reinhard Blumauer - anthropologist, Weltmuseum, Wien
Emanuele Rinaldo Meschini - art critic, curator, author, Venice IT

*Art in Drublic refers to a quote from the album Punk in Drublic (1994) by punk band NOFX. It means “drunk in public” and has a double interpretation possibility. One refers to the fact that consequences of drunkenness in public can lead to police punishment, Another meaning is described by French sociologist Michel Maffesoli as a kind of Dionysian state that can overcome barriers and prohibitions, especially those related to the control of public space itself.
