Lewis Stein was born in 1945 in New York, where he lives.
The artist was represented in the Whitney Annual (precursor to the Whitney Biennial) in 1969 at age 24. His first exhibitions, all solo exhibitions, were at the Nicholas Wilder Gallery in Los Angeles, the David Whitney Gallery in New York and the Rolf Ricke Gallery in Cologne, between 1969 and 1972.
Furthermore, Lewis Stein had exhibitions at Essex Street, New York (2017); Museum Für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2007); the Whitney Museum (1969); Annina Nosei Gallery, New York (1987), among others.
His work is in the following collections and museums, among others: the New Museum, New York; Ludwig Museum, Cologne; Dakis Joannou Collection, Greece; Museum Fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany; MAMCO, Musee d’art Moderne et Contemporain, Geneva; Wilhelm and Gaby Schurmann, Berlin.
