The group project with the working title “Mountains painted by Cats” features two apparently disparate themes: “cats” and “mountains”. These are two hierarchically different notions that artists want to bring together. The enquiry of the exhibition is to reflect on the condition of shifting territories we became accustomed to calling home or at least a base. As well as toying with the meme pop culture within which we are living in.
The cat is first allowed into the house to indicate a place in it. This is both a warm invitation and domestication. Speaking of mountains - the conquest of mountains, subjugation of the peak, leaving a mark, the colonization of the unknown, and of course a symbol of Austria.
Most of the artists involved in the project currently live and work in Vienna but are migrants. The exhibition will be an experiment. In the mountains painted by cats. The presentation of artistic practices provides insights into diverse disciplinary efforts. Rather than in didactic form, the works comprehend two alternate contexts humorously.
