There is a kind of institutional space that gets transplanted from place to place—one that changes shape across time and location while retaining standard qualities and certain operational tendencies. A park, a lobby, a plaza, a waiting room.
Take a photo of a fixture from a place like this. Give the flat thing back its objectness: extrude each thing, attempt to gain back its depth—make a banal object less recognizable as a result; the volume between the two flat faces, a third new space that didn’t exist before.” KB & FM
