Film Video Screening

Films by Moira Tierney

The presented program is the first comprehensive but not complete collection of films by experimental filmmaker Moira Tierney in Vienna.
Moira’s socio-political geographies have been covering Dublin, the city she was born in, Paris, where she studied and New York where she has been living for the past decade as well as multiple other “stops” and “pauses” in other cities, countries, and contexts. Her life as a nomad between different political, social and cultural spaces is sensitively reflected in her work.

Unfortunately Moira Tierney cannot join us in person with her 16mm prints due to travel restrictions. The program therefore will be projected digitally.
After the screening the filmmaker will join us for a conversation via video call.

curated by Masha Godovannaya

Riba/Fish
16mm / 5’ / 2017
In 2000, Masha Godovannaya curated a travelling program entitled “Avant-Garde Alternatives: An Evolution of American Experimental Film”, which went on tour in Russia, making stops in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg. I was working with Masha at Anthology Film Archives and she invited me to join the tour as a film-maker and curatorial assistant. I brought my 16mm Krasnogorsk camera with me and shot as I went. ”Riba/Fish” and “Morzh / Walrus” were shot during the month I spent in Russia and edited back in New York.

Matilda Tone
Super 8mm blown up to 16mm / 25’ / 2005
Love & revolution in a Brooklyn graveyard … a collision of 18th & 21st century body politics. MATILDA TONE is portrait of an 18th century Dublin woman who was intimately involved with the 1798 Irish rebellion. Her husband, Theobald Wolfe Tone, died in prison; to avoid any posthumous romanticising of the facts, Matilda published his collected diaries, a text which became the handbook for generations of Irish independence activists.

You Can’t Keep A Good Snake Down (co-directed with Masha Godovannaya)
16mm / 4’ / 2000
For a long time Saint Patrick has been touted as the redemptor of Pagan Ireland: the man who rid the country of its snake population. We felt it was time to redress this historical imbalance and give the snakes their due. It’s all in the Eye of the Chameleon …

Morzh / Walrus
16mm / 3’ / 2001
Another film from Russian Series.
Moscow tower block polar bear.

Are We There Yet? (music by Macdara Smith & the Bahh Band)
16mm / loop installation / 2010 — 10 min
The film was commissioned by the Leitrim Sculpture Centre in Manorhamilton, County Leitrim, as part of an initiative of the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland. Four Irish artists were asked to create a personal response to the border and were assigned two schools each, where they carried out a series of workshops. The resulting new work was featured in an exhibition entitled FIELDS OF VISION at the Leitrim Sculpture Centre.

Ride City
Super 8mm / 10’ / 1999
The twin-screen battle for survival of Dublin’s inner-city Smithfield Horse Market.
