Saskia Te Nicklin: So Fresh On Top, So Rotten Below

Vin Vin is pleased to announce Saskia Te Nicklin second solo exhibition with the gallery, with a text by Victoria Dejaco. The exhibition will be introduced by a conversation between Victoria Dejaco and Saskia Te Nicklin at 5 pm.

So Fresh On Top, So Rotten Below

My Gently Fermenting Compost
Roses are red
Violets are blue
The perfume is lovely
And so are you
Orchids are white
Morning Ghosts are rare
My surgery is plastic
And so is your hair
The Magnolia grows
We feast on rotten eggs
This green park is quite rubbery
And so are your legs
Sunflowers reach
Up to the skies
Your mess is foul smelling
And so are your eyes
Foxgloves in hedges
Surround the farms
BPA-free water bottles are safe
And so are your arms
Daisies are pretty
Daffies have style
Your plastic spoon is cracked
And so your smile
so vile
A Compost is beautiful
…Just like you

Saskia te Nicklin’s artistic practice is characterized by a clumsy and playful quality the artist intentionally pursues, and by the subtle and non narrative way in which she employs tools to reference – always with lightness –certain topics.
The artist’s gesture does not invite univocal interpretations, instead, it aims to generate questions, ambiguity, sometimes even irritation, often through narrative clusters.
The characters she depicts are often gender fluid, funny, grotesque and undefined.
Te Nicklin’s practice relies on contrasts: the raw aesthetics of her characters is heightened by the shiny surface of the aluminium panels on which they are depicted, while the viewers themselves are reflected in the aluminium, thereby becoming part of the work. On another level her work plays with the contrast between the dramatic character of certain gestures and the reassuring, almost idyllic quality of others, all the while retaining an undefined, ambiguous mood, never fully clear, never really comforting.

Saskia Te Nicklin (b.1979, Copenhagen) had solo and group exhibitions, among others, at: Christian Andersen, Copenhagen (2012); Rachel Uffner, New York (2013); Lenikus Collection, Vienna (2014); Galerie Naechst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder, Vienna (2015); Austrian Cultural Forum, Tokio (2017); Galerie der Stadt Schwaz (2018); Vin Vin at Ruyter (2018); Vestjyllands Kunstpavillon, Denmark (2019). At Miart 2019, Milan, the International Fair for Modern and Contemporary Art, Saskia Te Nicklin has been awarded with LCA Law Firm Prize with a jury composed of Sarah McCrory, Director, Goldsmiths CCA, London; François Quintin, Director, Lafayette Anticipations - Fondation d’entreprise Galeries Lafayette and Fonds de dotation Famille Moulin, Paris; Kathleen Reinhardt, Curator of Contemporary Art, Albertinum Dresden.
Saskia Te Nicklin, furthermore, is assistant to Martin Guttmann at the Academy of fine Arts, Vienna.
