A coming together of chance and specifics
Leonard Korbus and Ted Green present their first collaborative exhibition focussing on Site Specifics in cooperation with Studio POTF. The artists began working together in early October with their mutual inte- rest in working site specifically. A main concern is how their related working methods can be expressed through various media. Studio POTF proposed a requirement of an exhibition documenting a direct res- ponse to their space. A particularly striking element to the space is the arches and the brickwork and thus became the basis of their work together.
Leonard Korbus (* 1991 in Mainz) is a conceptual artist with his work based in Leipzig. After studying at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle(Saale), he moved to the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts in 2016 to pursue his conceptual work. Currently Korbus is doing an internship with the Art in Public Space faculty at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna.
Ted Green (*1993 in Birmingham) lives and works in Vienna since completing his studies at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, London in 2016. He now studies within the Art in Public Space faculty at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna.
The duo decided to take this idea of working site specifically very literally by actually extracting a brick from the most central arch. This brick then became the pivot to which they will work. Through casting techniques, Korbus is reiterating the position of said brick by forming multiple replicas and placing it around the space, in order for it to then perform a new purpose, for example acting as the plinths on which the photographic objects are placed.
Green is interested in expanding the gallery space into the digital realm and did this previously through augmented reality, working with digital media, the Internet and technological advances. The presented images were created by a digital software glitch in his phone and appeared by chance whilst sightseeing at the Hofburg Imperial Palace. The photographic objects also act as an extension of the space through reflection due to the manner in which they are placed. The formal elements that appear within the images are reminiscent of the exhibition space. Green is therefore drawing attention to these formal elements and how they deliver a direct response to the arches and brickwork. Korbus’ artistic practice is very much sculptural contrasting with Green’s more digital approach and yet working with the space of POTF they were able to combine a collaboration in style that reacts individually and together simultaneously to the space.
