The VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA, for the first time, presents a completely different practice of its history of large ensemble improvisation: the first part has a graphic score as its starting point and will be interpreted by the ensemble without conductor, the second part will be based on the method of instant composition conducting:
‘98 Sabores’ / ‘98 Flavors’ (UA)
A year of repetitive labour translated into a music piece.
For one year, the artist Aimée Suárez Netzahualcóyotl worked as a Food Tour Guide in Mexico City’s downtown. During this time, 98 days, the artist recorded the highlights of her repetitive job in a labor diary. When she stopped working there, she decided to give a visual representation to every cyclic event in her diary and 98 automated drawings were born.
In collaboration with the composer Martin Herraiz, these drawings were assigned to certain parameters, to be interpreted as scores.
‘every second, every day’ (UA)
instant composition conducting by Michael Fischer
AIMÉE SUÁREZ NETZAHUALCÓYOTL explores everyday life through practices such as writing and visual arts. She is interested in creating systems, f.i. cyclic repetition, to translate things/ ideas/events from one medium to another. She earned a BA in Visual Arts by the Faculty of Arts and Design of the National Autonomous Univ. of Mexico; in 2012 she studied at the Univ. of California, USA. Since 2010, group and solo shows in Mexico City. Published at: A day in the world (Sweden 2012), Melí Meló: NUEVE INTERCAMBIOS ¿quieres un cuadro? (Mexico 2016), Volume Thirty-Three, Studio Visit Magazine (USA 2016), GasTV and Zona de Desgaste. https://bit.ly/2JxNWop

Since 2004 the VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA is focused on a specific form of experimental composition and complex improvised music: within an oscillating process musicians and conductor create ad hoc compositions, mediated by a vocabulary of hand-signs and gestures. The VIO is Austria’s first orchestra dedicated to this method which has been developed in variety worlwide by a few improvising orchestras within the last 15-20 years, mainly referring to Lawrence Butch Morris’/New York work on ‘conductions’.
Performing in ever changing line-ups, the VIO unifies singers and musicians out of Austria’s most outstanding acoustic and electro-acoustic improvised music, jazz and contemporary composed music scenes and ensembles.
Since its beginning, the processes of merging sound and recitation, their vice versa influence, the metamorphosis of sound- and word-pictures a.o. phenomenons arising, were an additional beam of the VIO’s poetic presence, hence collaborating with splendid writers in experimental poetry.
Inviting international guests, f.i. Josefa Alonso/Madrid, collaborating with GGRIL/Canada or the Budapest Improvisers Orchestra, or initiating the JUMPiN!-Choir project, the VIO performes at Künstlerhaus Wien, Porgy & Bess, Brut Wien, Belvedere 21 - Museum Of Contemporary Art, Reaktor Wien, ArtActs Festival/A, Art Brut Center Gugging/A, ZOOM!-JazzWerkstattWienFestival, Három Holló Budapest, RadioKulturhaus Wien a.m.o..
