Kite flying has been popular in Thailand about 700 years ago until recent modernization of society. It is an ancient sport dignified by rules and regulations with a heritage involving from kings to commoners.
The „Chula“ kite is one of the most glorious traditional Thai kite. In ancient times throughout history it was also used as a weapon for aerial bombing. Besides, not only it was a casual attempt to see how high it can fly towards the sky, but also it was famous for battle games. “Chula” is the male kite in the shape of a star against a female kite called a “Pakpao” during a competition.
The “Kite” becomes a main part of Thai culture from generation to generation, but social interests has changed over time. Also the lifestyle of society has changed because of general development, trough technology and urbanization. The relationship between human and the surroundings also has changed. The space for kiting in Thailand is getting less and less in communities and its land, neither in the city nor country side. Therefore Chula and Pakpao kite fighting competition got extinct. Nowadays, proper „Chula“ kites are hard to find and rarely to be seen.
The title of this work „Failing to fly is“ refers to flying up to the sky down to the ground, is a performative art installation about how things that were once important, get forgotten and not needed anymore trough changes in society.
