To be in but not of
(invisible pop star)
at first, a question of
a voice for sure or one yet to be understood
which do you prefer?

and for a start a stolen term
that lays beyond our space to speak that
ends with ?love?

we will not repeat this,
we will not get there,

these are not my lyrics
that i?ll sing to you
these are not my moves
fighting a pile of wood /

The exhibition ?to be in but not of” is the outcome of the seminar “Art practice and institutionalized critique? The ambivalent role of critique in and within institutions? at the Institute of Fine Arts (IBK) of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Starting point of the seminar was the study of the text “The University and the Undercommons” by Stefano Harney and Fred Moten and collective discussions of issues of criticism of art institutions. Because institutional critique and identity politics have become a factor of (self-) marketing and individual surplus value, it is now a question of rethinking the possibilities of criticism in this contemporary setting.
