Jean-Luc Moulène in conversation with Corinne Diserens
An event of the Friends of the Secession (in English)

Jean-Luc Moulène (b. 1955) uses photography as a tool for studying natural and cultural phenomena as they have been redefined by the development of industry, media, and commerce. Away from communication models, he tries to emphasize the gap between the tool and the imaginary so as to produce real poetic alternatives.

He participated in Documenta X, Kassel, Germany (1997) and had solo shows at DIA: Beacon (2012), CCA, Kitakyushu, Japan (2004 & 1998), DAAD Galerie, Berlin (1996), ARC/Musée d?Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1997), the Jeu de Paume and the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France (2005), Thomas Dane Gallery, London, UK (2006, 2007 & 2012), Culturgest, Lisbon, Portugal (2007), Galerie Greta Meert, Brussels, Belgium (2007, 2014), Carré d?art, Nîmes, France (2009), Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris (2004, 2007, 2009 & 2012), Modern Art Oxford, Oxford, UK (2012), Beirut Art Center, Beirut & Extra-City, Antwerpen (2013), and many others. He lives in Paris.

The work of German-Italian Rosa Barba can be read against the background of a expanded notion of sculpture. In addition to issues of composition, the physicality of form and plasticity, time plays a central role. This aspect, combined with her interest in how film articulates space, sets work and viewer in a new relationship that is also mirrored in the content of her films. Each one is a topographical study of the modern unconscious. They are spaces of memory and uncertainty which can be read as a reassuring myth despite the instability of the reality they depict.

Rosa Barba, born in 1972 in Agrigent (Italy), lives and works in Berlin.

The abstract paintings of US American artist Anoka Faruqee are characterised by pulsating optical and chromatic effects. Patterns and motifs recur in her pictures as she adjusts and permutates them in apparently infinite variations in order to plumb the laws of painting. One of her central aims is to create a tension between the atmospheric impressions of light and illusion and the material nature of colour and paint.
