AUBREY WILLIAMS

Abstract Expressionist painter Aubrey Williams was the british-caribbean counterpart to the white northamerican role models of that art movement such as De Kooning and Pollock. He was considered at his time to be as original and radical as they where but had one mayor disadvantage – he was afro caribbean and consequently not suitable to be the hero of the art-elite some 30 years before Basquiat. This exhibition aims to be the start of a rehabilitation of his outstanding work which is not only of the highest artistic quality but also proof of how we have to rewrite art history in order to balance the all white picture?
