Three Vienna excursions on Sunday morning and afternoon

On Sunday we invite you to explore the beautiful city of Vienna and surronding areas with us on two alternative city walks and a vineyard visit.

?Vienna, my shadow kingdom?
An alternative city walk

Enrique is a ?supertramp?. He is homeless and therefore a very special expert on the city. ?We all move around the city every day. Normally, we always concentrate on our own tasks, our own goals. That?s why we don?t notice how many people are close to us, constantly, who do not have a task, a goal here. Who are just here because they don?t have anywhere else to go. Many people don?t notice them because they are a fixed part of the cityscape, like the pigeons. We pass by the grey figures without kicking them and without feeding them. In my tour I want to sharpen the perception for what remains hidden for most people in their daily life.?

The walks by the Supertramps combine insights into the city with learning about homelessness and personal life stories. It?s not about concern or sympathy. Irony, black humour, discussion, facts, anecdotes, philosophies of life, experiences, and dreams – all these are facets of these alternative city walks.

Protestwanderweg
An alternative protest trail through Vienna

Petitions, demonstrations, assemblies, strikes, occupations, referendums, human chains, pirate radio, pamphlets, seas of light? there are many ways how people have secured their rights and fight for them today.

The Erste Wiener Protestwanderweg [Vienna?s First Protest Wander Trail], a cooperation project by polis – The Austrian Centre for Citizenship Education in Schools and author Martin Auer, makes a contribution to enhancing democratic competence. The tour leads to places in Vienna associated with the topics of protest, resistance, solidarity, and civil courage.

In the framework of this urban exploration with Martin Auer we will visit select stations along the protest wander trail.

The vineyard with a view
Heuriger visit

Typical Vienna: A visit to the Heuriger, a must also for locals! Heurige are rustic taverns with cosy parlours and beautiful gardens, a lively expression of the century-old tradition allowing the vintners to serve their own wine on the premises of their farm and vineyard.
Incidentally, Vienna is the only metropolis in the world with a noteworthy viticulture within its city limits. 700 hectares of Viennese vineyards – a characteristic feature of this city.

People are drawn to the Heurige because of the relaxed atmosphere and the savoury food. Whether the homemade spreads, the roasts, but also vegetarian dishes – it?s usually quite hearty delights on the plate with Viennese wine or grape juice in the glass.

After a short and easy downhill hike we will visit the Heuriger Hirt in the vineyards with a view over Vienna, the Kahlenberger village, and the Danube.
