Art Research Driven Education and its Societal Impact
October 30–31, 2014
A Conference by the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Society for Artistic Research
Artistic practice lies at the very heart of society. The aim of this event is to investigate the implications of this via the operations in the field of artistic research.
Operation on the Open Heart brings together international artistic researchers and colleagues exploring how artistic practice advances society through insight-driven educational activities. Developments on relevant educational levels will be presented and discussed. The conference will be organised following the positive
experience of the Stockholm event Loitering with Intent in March 2014.

Section I Heart
Colleagues from different artistic practices will report on
their individual and collaborative work settings – their settings of production. Practice often differs from perception; what are the consequences of closely linking artistic practice? What of Alfredo Jaar’s claim that “99% of Artistic Practice is Research”?

Section II Operation
Operation focuses on the methodologies behind/for artistic work. Methodological knowledge is understood as one of the key demands for artistic research; this session presents
examples of methodology-driven work. Insight driven activities need modes of formation and understanding. These modes of understanding (understood as investigations with/via the heart’s activity) will be presented in this section.
