Lauren YS + Eröffnung REM-Cafe Event
opening of the soloshow of our current artist in residence Lauren YS, coffee, drinks, snacks, ‘‘Schanigarten’’/ terrace - opening
Lauren YS was born in the Colorado mountains and now lives and works in San Francisco, California. After graduating from Stanford Univesity in 2013, Lauren became a full time freelance artist and contributing writer for Juxtapoz Magazine. Lauren is the summer 2014 Artist in Residence at REM.
The german word ‘‘Kraken’’ means ‘‘octopus’’, yet its roots lie in the definite form of krake, a Norwegian word meaning ‘‘an unhealthy creature’’ or ‘‘something twisted.’’
The works in ‘‘Kraken’’ are a mixture of series and sketches from Lauren’s Vienna residency focusing on visual explorations of mania and mental afflictions, as well as representations of the legendary sea creature itself. Lauren’s style of illustration favors the strange and twisted, lending significance to the octopus in both symbolism and etymology. These works are mainly ink on paper, made to accompany the hand-painted outdoor facade of the REM Art Space.
LAUREN YS X REM
REM has produced two limited edition screen prints and a t-shirt featuring designs from Lauren’s latest body of work. The show will accompany the opening of REM’s brand new coffee shop, so be sure to come by and get one of these limited pieces along with your caffeine fix.
