Akephalie ist eine Bezeichnung für die Eigenschaft von Gesellschaften, kein herrschendes Oberhaupt zu haben, sondern allenfalls Respektpersonen. Entscheidungen werden im gemeinsamen Diskurs gefunden. Der Ausdruck wurde in der Ethnologie benutzt, um tribes without rulers zu kategorisieren. Kritiker monieren, dass die Kategorisierung einer Gesellschaft als „akephal“ lediglich über das Nichtvorhandensein von Staatlichkeit Auskunft gebe, über die vorhandenen politischen Organisationsformen jedoch keine Aussagen mache. So markiere der Begriff nur eine diffuse Andersartigkeit, ohne etwas über die tatsächlichen politischen Systeme der als „akephal“ bezeichneten Gesellschaften auszusagen.
