Filmvorführung: Good morning, Mr. Hitler! & Diskussion mit Luke Holland Event
A study of ‘fascism as the aestheticisation of politics’.
Produced and Directed by Luke Holland and Paul Yule
This stunning documentary film (an official Channel 4 entry for the Prix Europa and the International Arts Emmy) is based on 35 minutes of 16mm Kodachrome colour footage of Hitler and the entire Nazi leadership, filmed at the height of their power in July 1939. This remarkable footage, is one of the best colour material of the Nazi leadership that exists. It was given its first TV outing in ‘Good Morning Mr Hitler!’ (1993).
Among the principal characters in ‘Good Morning, Mr Hitler!’ are the sons of the unofficial cameraman who shot the 16mm colour footage; a fellow member of Munich’s amateur film club; a close friend of Hitler’s, who in deference to his wish for ‘privacy’ during frequent visits to her home, never said ‘Heil mein Führer’ but always ‘Good Morning, Mr Hitler’ – and a painter and horsewoman who, in 1939, rode through the streets of Munich dressed as a Walküre. The film also includes dramatic sequences, filmed inside the German Government depot, where paintings purchased by Hitler were kept under lock and key.
