From 26 May to 5 July, Song Song is pleased to present Touch and Resist, an exhibition of works by artist Jutta Koether.
The ways in which Koether (b. 1958) rewires the discourses of performance, music, and painting are both widely recognized and well rehearsed in her work’s critical reception. The artist takes this exhibition at Song Song as an opportunity to assert her art’s engagement with a less familiar territory. The project for Song Song is born in Koether’s appreciation of the exacting expectations faced by those creating clothing, where designers must assimilate the new materials that are constantly being introduced while punctually reinventing the conventions of dress.
As such, Koether’s exhibition is rooted in Song Song, but it spreads into Song, the adjacent clothing shop, so that a stack of paintings, or a sculpture, or a page of text, is encountered alongside a line of handbags, or a necklace, or a coat.
Jutta Koether was born in 1958 in Cologne; since the early nineties she has lived and worked in New York City. Selected exhibitions include: Kunsthalle Bern (2007); Kölnischer Kunstverein (2006); Reena Spaulings Fine Art, New York (with Kim Gordon) (2006); Whitney Biennial, New York (group) (2006); Thomas Erben Gallery, New York (2005); Simultanhalle, Cologne (2005); Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Cologne (2004); Galerie Meerettich, Berlin (2004); P.S.1, New York (group) (2004); Swiss Institute, New York (group) (2002); Frankfurter Kunstverein (2003); Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Köln (2002); Galerie Freund, Vienna (2000); Pat Hearn Gallery, New York (1999); INIT-Kunsthalle, Berlin (1999) …
Koether currently teaches in New York at SVA and Cooper Union; she writes frequently, including regular contributions to Texte Zur Kunst, Berlin.
