Creativity helped by limitation

8-bit stands for « data is sent by waves of 8 times 0 or 1 ». Computers in the 80’s used to manipulate data this way, making interactive design to be limited to a few colors and to low resolution displays. Todays machines use at least 64-bit systems, that’s why colors are now counted by millions and displayed on high resolution screens. Since creativity is often helped by limitation, some artists continue to create artworks the way is was on 8-bit systems.
Pikilipita don’t believe in high resolution. While not exactly being a « 8-bit artist », he creates video softwares for machines of a limited power and tries to get the most of them. He has chosen to work with video game systems only for live events.
Born in France, Pikilipita studied contemporary art and then moved to London in 2005. He quickly moved his visual artworks to the next level, producing and performing VJ sets in London venues under the name Pikilipita.
As one of the most original VJ on the circuit, he produces both animation footage and video software to mix them together. Pikilipita believes a laptop computer isn’t the only answer when using a machine to perform animated visual art, so he controls all his visuals from computer consoles, usually a combo of Nintendo Gamecube / Game Boy Advance cartridge. Turning his own visuals into an interactive game, he can be seen in the middle of the dancefloor controlling his cutesy animal family as they embark on a rave journey.
His shows are stuctured as video games: each stage is a playlist focused on a theme or a visual art minigame.

STITCH IT!
Ein textiles 8 bit Projekt zur Förderung der Kontemplation und Medienkompetenz

STITCH IT! ist ein intermediales 8 bit Entschleunigungsprojekt zur Neukontextualisierung medialer Artefakte (den gängigen Informationsmedien TV und Zeitung entnommen), die durch ihre mechanische Reproduktion oftmals vergessen lassen, dass hinter jedem Bild auch immer ein reales Ereignis steht (und sei es das der Bildmanipulation). STITCH IT! positioniert sich an der Schittstelle zwischen digitalem Lowtech-Shit und Handarbeitskurs, um in einer wolligen Welt am Sessel der Bildermacht zu sägen.
Videostills und Pressefotos werden mit der Opensource Software KnitPro auf einen 8bit Farbraum reduziert und soweit abstrahiert, dass sie sich als Stickvorlagen eignen.
Karin Heide unterrichtet an der FH Joanneum Animationsdesign und Postproduction und beschäftigt sich seit zehn Jahren mit Echtzeitvideobearbeitung. Seit fünf Jahren ist sie Resident VJ im Gameboymusic Club. In ihren Videoarbeiten beschäftigt sie sich fallweise mit den Grenzen zwischen digitalen und analogen Medienformaten und deren praktischer Überschreitung in der makrophysikalischen Welt.
