In the past even future seemed brighter …

20th century history was strongly informed by modernist and avant-guardist approaches. Later post-socialist narratives tended to interpret the experimental artistic initiatives of the previous era within the context of cultural resistance or subversion, deliberately forgetting that socialist regimes had founded their dogmas on collectivist and humanistic ideas, to modernize society by education. Through state funded film production some interesting works were created whose directors attempted to invest the filmic medium with a real social function.
