Artist Talk: Renzo Martens in conversation with Kolja Reichert

Renzo Martens in conversation with Kolja Reichert
on the occasion of the exhibition
PRODUKTION

In Renzo Martens? much discussed film ?Episode 3 (Enjoy Poverty)? (2008), filmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the artist depicts the economy of exploitation behind images of suffering from poor regions by reenacting the same economy with his own camera.
With the ?Institute for Human Activities?, Renzo Martens set out to gentrify the Congo through contemporary art, offering chocolate sculptures designed by cocoa and palm oil plantation workers for sale in galleries in wealthy regions.
Both projects are on view at Galerie nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder, Vienna, in the show ?PRODUKTION?, which explores the economy of critique and conditions of art-making today.
Before it closes on October 24th, curator Kolja Reichert talks to Renzo Martens about how to depict the structures that underlie the act of making and viewing images.
