Anna Barbieri: The Caryatides

Merged in an installative exhibition setting, the essay film The Caryatides traces the renaming of the “Zubra-Centre” in Sykhiv, Lviv, together with text fragments and photographic accounts that are part of a publication by the artist on the same architectural structure.

Since its opening in 1994, the shopping and communal centre formally known as “Zubra-Centre” has been referred to as “Santa-Barbara” by the local residents and inhabitants due to its architectural resemblance to the intro theme of the eponymous 1980s American soap opera. The publication offers an intimate, meandering and personal perspective on the building as “Santa-Barbara” and the process of working and researching about and around it. In the film central to the installation, “Santa-Barbara” – the collectively renamed “Zubra-Centre” – unfolds itself as a building, as architecture, as common auto fictional urban space, in participatory processes but especially as agency residing in affection, induced dreams and praxis.
