Yours to Discover

Dan Vogt

Shore is pleased to announce ‘Yours to Discover’, Dan Vogt’s first solo exhibition at the gallery.

Dan Vogt’s exhibition Yours to Discover named after an 80s Canadian advertising campaign, a response to America’s I ❤ NY, that attempted to revitalize the stale Ontario tourism sector by rebranding it as a destination, not a passageway. Widely regarded as a success, the campaign valorized vacationing within the province, gave Ontarians a sense of community and an overall interest in their surroundings.
Embracing the campaign’s underlying message, Vogt thinks about what it means to “return home”, reflecting on nostalgia and the feeling of being a spectator within one’s childhood home, which he describes as “a limbo somewhere between a vacation and real-life”.

Within Yours to Discover, sculptures that mimic the walls found in suburban homes will partition the exhibition space. The walls typically acting as flat 2-dimensional boundaries to a room are given agency and become something to go around and explore instead of something that purely contains.
Additionally, Vogt brings together photographs of picture frames, doilies and other knick-knacks that typically adorn the counters of middle-class homes with years old, sun-bleached posters, acquired from store windows. Together these objects represent to him a time that has passed, a development that has stalled.

Dan Vogt (born 1989 Kitchener, Canada) lives and works in Vienna.
Recent exhibitions include: Come Over Chez Malik’s, Hamburg; Gaertnergasse, Vienna; Main Street, Toronto; Foundation, Vienna; Garret Grimoire, Berlin.
