Urban planning has historically excluded large groups of city dwellers, namely all the people who don’t fit the norms and standards of a capitalistic, eurocentric, patriarchal society. Women, (gender-)queer people, disabled people, POC and economically disadvantaged people and their needs are still severely underrepresented within the decision-making processes of places dedicated to the public – a public they help fund and are a part of. Our cities have been built on standards derived from the needs of patriarchal societies.

“Exposed: Unveiling Gender in Urban Spaces” seeks to examine the experience of city life, architecture, urban planning, and urban community living from a gendered perspective. When we leave the safety of our homes, we become exposed: visible to – and judged by – others. We become part of the urban landscape. How much we fit in and how safe we are depends heavily on how different we are from others. The exhibition is intended to be a research project exploring the ways in which space affects us and the place of people who don’t fit gender stereotypes in the space of the city. An intersectional gender led perspective lies at the core of its concept.
