The exhibition presents three influential international artists from different generations whose work reformulates the relationship between picture and language/text that is so essential to the tradition of conceptual art. All three artists are represented by specific artworks that reflect this year?s theme of curated by_vienna, while also highlighting lesser known aspects in their work concerning the dialectics of visuality and reflexivity.

curated by_vienna 2017: image/reads/text. Language in Contemporary Art

With the gallery festival curated by_vienna, the Vienna Business Agency has been strengthening Vienna as an international gallery and business location since 2009 and is supporting the cooperation between Viennese galleries for contemporary art and international curators.

Every year, curated by_vienna is dedicated to a specific theme finding its multifaceted expression in the individual exhibitions of the participating galleries.

The contacts gained in the course of curated by_vienna contribute to intensifiying and fostering cooperation between various actors of the international art scene and classical businesses.

With exhibitions in 21 Vienna galleries, conceptualised by international curators, this year?s curated by_vienna gallery festival examines the significance and function of language in contemporary art. This seems particularly relevant in view of widespread digitalisation and the associated trends towards visualisation. These tendencies require a reconsideration of the mutual conditionality and permeation of the visible and the utterable as well as the incongruency between the two.

The festival?s title ?image/reads/text?, coined by the artist HEINRICH DUNST, spans a broad range of associations to this year?s topic which moves along the intersections between language and art.
